1760 – Deborah Sampson Gannett (December 17, 1760 – April 29, 1827), who fought in the American Revolution disguised as the soldier Robert Shurtlieff, is born. She was a Massachusetts woman who disguised herself as a man in order to serve in the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War. She is one of a small number of women with a documented record of military combat experience in that war. She served 17 months in the army under the name “Robert Shirtliff” (also spelled Shirtliffe or Shurtleff), was wounded in 1782, and was honorably discharged at West Point, New York in 1783. During World War II the Liberty Ship S.S. Deborah Gannett (2620) was named in her honor. As of 2001, the town flag of Plympton incorporates Sampson as the Official Heroine of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. In her speech at the Democratic National Convention on July 26, 2016, Meryl Streep named Sampson in a list of women who had made history.

12-17-1936 – 05-22-2005 Bertha Harris – Born in Fayetteville, North Carolina. She was an American lesbian novelist. She moved to New York in the 1960s. Her work is highly regarded by critics and admirers, but her novels are less familiar to the general public. Her most notable work, Lover, is written with the Women’s Movement of the 1970s as its primary inspiration and its audience. Harris co-authored The Joy of Lesbian Sex in 1977 with Emily L. Sisley. Harris’ life-long companion of twenty-four years was the late Camilla Clay Smith. At the time of her death, she was completing her fourth novel, Mi Contra Fa. She died in New York City.

12-17-1945   Dame Jacqueline Wilson – Born in Bath, Somerset, England. She is an English novelist known for her popular children’s literature. Her

 novels feature controversial themes such as adoption, mental illness, and divorce. Since her debut novel in 1969, Wilson has written over 100 books. In 2010, her books were the most checked out from libraries across the UK. In 2008, Wilson was appointed Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE). Wilson married in 1965 when she was 19 and had a daughter. The couple separated and then divorced in 2004. In April 2020, Wilson publicly came out as lesbian. She revealed that she had been living with her female partner, Trish, for 18 years. Her book Love Frankie was published on September 17, 2020, and is the second to feature a lesbian love story.

At Owen Bradley’s Quonset Hut studio in Nashville, Patsy Cline recorded “She’s Got You,” the follow-up single to her two big hits, “I Fall to Pieces” and “Crazy.” Released in late January 1962, the record was so successful that it earned her an appearance on “American Bandstand,” became her first hit single in the UK, and led to Cline having her own show in Las Vegas the following November.

12-17-1974 Sarah Paulson – Born in Tampa, Florida. She is an American film, stage, and television actress. Paulson was in the

comedy films What Women Want (2000) and Down With Love (2003). She has also starred in a number of made-for-television movies and independent films. In 2013, Paulson starred as Mary Epps in the Oscar winning film, 12 Years a Slave. In 2011, she began starring in the FX series American Horror Story. Paulson has also appeared on Broadway. She dated actress Cherry Jones. In 2007, she and Jones declared their love for each other in an interview with Velvetpark at Women’s Event 10 for the LGBT Center of NYC. They broke up in 2009. She has stated the she is open to relationships with women and men going forward. Since early 2015, she has been in a relationship with actress Holland Taylor.

The third movie version of “A Star is Born,” starring Barbra Streisand, Kris Kristofferson, Gary Busey, Oliver Clark, and Sally Kirkland, opened in U.S. and Canadian movie theaters.

1977

Linda Ronstadt’s Simple Dreams (#1 on the Album chart for a third week) continued to hold of Fleetwood Mac’s bid to return to #1 with Rumours.

Debby Boone set a Rock Era record that would last four years with her 10th and final week at #1 for “You Light Up My Life”.  Linda Ronstadt had #3 (“Blue Bayou”) and #5 (“It’s So Easy”), Crystal Gayle was lodged between with “Don’t It Make My Brown Eyes Blue”, Rita Coolidge held on to #7 with “We’re All Alone”, #9 Fleetwood Mac and “You Make Loving Fun” and Dolly Parton was at #10 with “Here You Come Again”.

 Karen Carpenter made her last live appearance with The Carpenters when she performed in Sherman, California. Carpenter suffered from anorexia nervosa, the eating disorder which was a little-known illness at the time. She died at the age of 32 from heart failure, on February 4, 1983 caused by complications related to her illness.

Karen Thompson is named Sharon Kowalski’s (born 1956)  legal guardian after an eight-year fight. In re Guardianship of Kowalski, 478 N.W.2d 790 (Minn. Ct. App. 1991), is a Minnesota Court of Appeals case that established a lesbian‘s partner as her legal guardian after she became incapacitated following an automobile accident. Because the case was contested by Kowalski’s parents and family and initially resulted in the partner being excluded for several years from visiting Kowalski, the gay community celebrated the final resolution in favor of the partner as a victory for gay rights. The Minnesota Court of Appeals rule in Thompson’s favor on December 17, 1991. Thompson attorney commented: “This seems to be the first guardianship case in the nation in which an appeals court recognized a homosexual partner’s rights as tantamount to those of a spouse.” The two women continue to live together, along with another woman, Patty Bresser, in what Thompson calls her “family of affinity,” and they all continue to speak out about LGBT and disability rights. Their story has been documented in the film Lifetime Commitment: A Portrait of Karen Thompson.

1992 – Patricia Ireland (born October 19, 1945), president of the National Organization for Women, comes out as bisexual. She is a U.S. administrator and feminist. She served as president of the National Organization for Women from 1991 to 2001 and published an autobiography, What Women Want, in 1996. Immediately following Ireland’s appointment to president of NOW, questions arose about her sexual orientation. On December 17, 1991 she gave an interview with The Advocate, in which she stated that she was bisexual and had a female companion while remaining married to her second husband.

1994

Celine Dion married her manager Rene Angelil at the Notre Dame Basilica in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. She was 12 and he 38 when he managed her career and when Dion was 19; he left his wife….

15-year-old female student who says she was banned from gym class at school because she is a lesbian filed a lawsuit Tuesday against her instructors and the school district, accusing them of discrimination.

Ashly Massey and her mother, along with the American Civil Liberties Union and the National Center for Lesbian Rights, filed the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles

2004

Elvis Presley’s daughter, Lisa Marie, agreed to sell 85% of his estate to businessman Robert FX Sillerman in a deal worth $100,000,000. Sillerman will run Presley’s Memphis home, Graceland, will own Elvis’ name and likeness, as well as the rights to his photographs and revenue from his music and films. Lisa Marie will retain ownership of Graceland and many of her father’s personal effects. The agreement was to pay her $53 million in cash and absolve her of $25m in debts owed by the estate. She will also receive shares in the new company expected to be worth more than $20 million. Actress Priscilla Presley, Lisa Marie’s mother and Presley’s former wife, remained executive consultant to the business.

2007: The National Assembly of Hungary passes registered partnerships, to become effective on January 1, 2009. The law gives the same rights to registered partners as to married spouses except for adoption.

Adele was named Billboard’s top artist of 2012, while her hit record 21 was named top album of the year in the music magazine’s annual review. The 24-year-old became the first to receive both accolades two years in a row.
