03-26-1928 — 06-21-2019   Harriet Sohmers Zwerling – American writer and artist’s model. She lived in Paris in the 1950s. She was bisexual and had a few love relationships with women, including Maria Irene Fornés from 1954 to 1957, and then Susan Sontag until 1958. She also appears in the documentary Regarding Susan Sontag, shown at the Tribeca film festival, April 2014.

03-26-1954 – 12-10-2008 Dorothy Featherstone Porter – Born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. She was an Australian poet. She received many awards including The Age Book of the Year for poetry, the National Book Council Award for The Monkey’s Mask, and the FAW Christopher Brennan Award for poetry. In 2000, the film The Monkey’s Mask was made from her verse novel of the same name. Porter was working on a rock opera called January with Tim Finn at the time of her death. Porter was openly lesbian and in 1993 moved to Melbourne to be with her partner, fellow writer Andrea Goldsmith. In 2009, Porter was posthumously recognized by the website samesame.com.au as one of the most influential gay and lesbian Australians. She died of breast cancer at the age of 54.

March 26, 1955

The Hearts, (originally called the Jaynets), one of the first rock ‘n’ roll female groups, stormed the R&B charts with their scintillating, powerhouse performance of “Lonely Nights,” reaching #8. The record was also one of the first to have a talking bridge, and anyone who’s heard that smokin’ line “You great big lump o’ sugar” will never forget the first in-your-face- attitude hit. The group included Zell Sanders, Jeanette “Baby” Washington, Hazel Crutchfield, Forestine Barnes, Joyce West, and later Louise Harris.

03-26-1971 Rennae Stubbs – Born in Sydney, Australia. She is a retried Australian 

professional tennis player. She has won 4 Grand Slam Doubles Titles and 2 Grand Slam Mixed Doubles Titles. She also represented Australia at four successive Olympic Games. Stubbs went from playing tennis immediately into a successful television career as a commentator and host for TV Networks including, ESPN, Tennis Channel, and Channel Seven Australia. She also worked as the lead female analyst at the 2012 London Olympics for NBC. She is openly lesbian.

1975: After the local district attorney’s office rules that there are no county laws preventing two people of the same-sex from getting married, Boulder, Colorado county clerk Clela Rorex issues a marriage license to two gay men. It is the first same-sex marriage license issued in the United States. She says in a statement, “I don’t profess to be knowledgable about homosexuality or even understand it, but it’s not my business why people get married.  No minority should be discriminated against.”

1977

Natalie Cole led the way once again on the R&B chart as her great song “I’ve Got Love On My Mind” was #1 for a fifth week.

Breaking the record for the longest-charting Pop album, previously held by Carole King’s “Tapestry”; Pink Floyd’s 1973 album “Dark Side Of The Moon” became the album with the longest consecutive stay on the Billboard 200 album chart, remaining there until 1988. 

1985: A 4-4 tie vote in the U.S. Supreme Court effectively overturns an Oklahoma law that would have banned homosexuals, or those defending or “promoting” the homosexual “lifestyle”, from teaching in the state’s public schools.

1988

USA Song charts, #3 Debbie Gibson was back with “Out Of The Blue”, Belinda Carlisle with her former #2 smash now #6 “I Get Weak”,  

After nine weeks at #1 on the Album chart and then falling back, the Soundtrack to “Dirty Dancing” had now spend three more weeks at #1.  

1989

In the Soviet Union, the first free elections took place. Boris Yeltsin was elected to be the first President of the Russian Federation.

1990s: The Queer Slur Reclaimed: Act Up! Lesbian Avengers and Queer Nation

1992

Trisha Yearwood’s self-titled debut album was certified Platinum.

1994

03-26-1994   Alison Van Uytvanck – Born in Grimbergen, Belgium. She is a Belgian professional tennis player. On October 26, 2015, she reached her best singles ranking of world No. 41, and her best doubles ranking of world No. 106.

Van Uytvanck is openly lesbian and is in a relationship with fellow Belgian tennis player Greet Minnen as of  2018.

USA LP charts Toni Braxton’s self-titled debut fell from 1 to 5, Music Box by Mariah Carey was on its way down  and The Colour of My Love from Celine Dion fell to #8.

1995

An opera based on the life of tennis player Martina Navratilova premiered at New York’s Carnegie Hall.

1996

The Woman in Me the second studio album by Shania Twain was at No.1 on the Country chart. It went onto become her biggest-selling recording at the time of its release, selling 4 million copies by the end of the year. ‘Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under?’, a song about a woman confronting her lover about his frequent infidelity, was released at the first single from the album.

2000s – “gay and lesbian” to “lesbigay” to “Lgbt/Lgbtq/Lgbtq2”

Melanie C of the Spice Girls replaced former Spice Girl Geri Halliwell at #1 in the U.K. with “Never Be The Same Again”, her duet with Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes of TLC.

Celine Dion released the album A New Day Has Come.

After nearly a decade, Lick nightclub, the only operating lesbian bar in Vancouver, is closing its doors.
