Atlantic Records releases Shake, Rattle and Roll by Big Joe Turner.

Meanwhile at Decca Records: Bill Haley and His Comets recorded “(We’re Gonna) Rock Around the Clock” at the Pythian Temple, “a big, barn-like building with great echo,” in New York City. Most music historians agree that the song, featured in the 1955 film “Blackboard Jungle,” ushered in the rock ‘n’ roll era. It hit #1 on June 29, 1955, stayed there for eight weeks, remained on the charts for a total of 24 weeks, and has sold more than 25 million copies. Written by Max C. Freedman and James E. Myers, ‘Rock Around The Clock’ was first recorded by Italian-American band Sonny Dae and His Knights.

04-12-1961   Magda Szubanski – Born in Liverpool, England. She is an Australian television and film actress, comedian, and writer

. In 2015, she released her memoir Reckoning. Twice she has been number one as Australia’s most recognized and trusted personality. In 2017, she was one of the most prominent faces of the Marriage Equality campaign in Australia and was thought of as crucial in the success of the “Yes” campaign.

On February 14, 2012, Szubanski came out in a statement supporting same-sex marriage and stated that she “absolutely identifies as gay” in an interview on Australian TV.

04-12-1964   Amy Ray – Born in Decatur, Georgia. She is an American singer/songwriter and one of the contemporary folk duo Indigo Girls. She has also released six albums under her own name, and founded Daemon Records. Indigo Girls was formed in 1986 by Ray and Emily Saliers. The two women have known each other since elementary school. Ray currently lives in North Georgia with her wife, Carrie Schrader. The couple have a daughter. Ray is also a political and social activist, supporting gay rights, women’s rights, indigenous struggles, gun control, and environmental protection.

04-12-1975 Jennifer Knapp – Born in Chanute, Kansas. She is an American-Australian folk rock and formerly contemporary Christian musician.

She is best known for her first single Undo Me. Following the end of her 2002 tour, Knapp moved to Australia and became an Australian citizen. April 13, 2010, in simultaneous interviews with Christianity TodayReuters, and The Advocate, Knapp came out as a lesbian. She had been in a same-sex relationship since 2002. In 2011, she launched Inside Out Faith, an advocacy organization for LGBT people of faith.

Mariah Carey released the CD “The Emancipation of Mimi.” It entered the U.S. album chart at #1, went six times platinum in less than a year, and became the most successful album of 2005.

2006

Martha And The Vandellas‘ version of “Dancing in the Street” is announced as one of 50 sound recordings preserved by the Library of Congress to the National Recording Registry.

2008

With her latest single “4 Minutes,” Madonna surpassed Elvis Presley as the artist with the most all-time Top Ten Hits on the Billboard pop chart .

The Vatican’s official newspaper L’Osservatore Ramano published a story praising The Beatles and saying that it forgave John Lennon for his 1966 comment that the group was “bigger than Jesus.” Lennon told a British newspaper in 1966 – at the height of Beatlemania – that he did not know which would die out first, Christianity or rock and roll.

A report showed that British artists including Sam Smith, Ed Sheeran and Adele had helped the music industry return to meaningful growth for the first time in almost 20 years. British artists accounted for five of the top 10 selling albums during 2015, as the global music industry generated $15bn (£10.5bn).

April 12, 2019 (day varies from year to year) is a student-led national event that brings attention to anti-LGBT name-calling, bullying and harassment in schools. Students from middle school to college take a vow of silence in an effort to encourage schools and classmates to address the problem of ant-LGBTQ behavior by illustrating silencing effect of bullying and harassment on LGBT students and those perceived to be LGBT.

No consideration of Cotton Ceiling harassment tho.
