10-02-1949 Annie Leibovitz – Born in Waterbury, Connecticut. She is an American portrait photographer. In 1970 she started her career as a staff photographer, working for Rolling Stone magazine. In 1973 she was named chief photographer of

Rolling Stone, a job she would hold for 10 years. On December 8, 1980, Leibovitz had a photoshoot with John Lennon for Rolling Stone. She was the last person to professionally photograph Lennon—he was shot and killed five hours later. Leibovitz had a relationship with writer and essayist Susan Sontag from 1989 until Sontag’s death in 2004. In 2009, Leibovitz wrote in A Photographer’s Life that, “Words like ‘companion’ and ‘partner’ were not in our vocabulary. We were two people who helped each other throughout our lives. The closest word is still ‘friend.’” That same year, she said the description “lover” was accurate. She later reiterated, “Call us ‘lovers’. I like ‘lovers.’ You know, ‘lovers’ sounds romantic. I mean, I want to be perfectly clear. I loved Susan.”

Soul Train, a new, weekly TV show that showcased current R&B artists, makes its debut in the US. The first broadcast featured Gladys Knight And The Pips,

  Carole King was three weeks short of setting the record for weeks at #1 (18) with her masterpiece Tapestry while #7  the Carpenters’ self-titled release

1976

Helen Reddy scored her 15th hit on the Easy Listening chart with “I Can’t Hear You No More”.  Amazingly, 14 of those were Top 10, including 11 in a row, and those 11 were either #1 (8) or #2 (3).

The first gay rodeo is held as a charity fundraising event at the Washoe County Fairgrounds in Reno, Nevada. It was organized by Phil Ragsdale, regarded as the “Father of Gay Rodeo.”

By 1985 it became the International Gay Rodeo Association, with rodeos held throughout the United States and Canada.

Eventually Lesbians were included and now it’s for anyone/everyone.

Mariah Carey paced an excellent Top 10 as “Dreamlover” reigned for a fourth week. #5  Janet Jackson’s “If” and #8 newcomer Toni Braxton reached the Top 10 for the first time with the great track “Another Sad Love Song”

1999: 

USA – California governor Gray Davis signs three gay rights bills into law. The first outlaws harassment of homosexual students and teachers in the state’s public schools. The second creates a new state-wide domestic partnership registry. The third outlaws job and housing discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation.

2000s – “gay and lesbian” to “lesbigay” to “Lgbt/Lgbtq/Lgbtq2”

Cher achieved her highest charting solo album ever when “Closer To The Truth” reached #3 in America. The only time she placed a record higher was in 1965 when she and Sonny Bono reached #2 with “Look At Us”, an LP that featured the hit single “I Got You Babe”
